While Some Things Change… Some Remain the Same |
After months of negotiations, Delta Airlines announced in October 2008 that its long anticipated merger with Northwest Airlines has been approved. Northwest is now operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta, making the new airline the largest in the world. With more worldwide destinations than any other carrier, the new Delta will serve 375 cities in 66 countries from hubs in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis/St Paul, New York-JFK, Salt Lake City, and Tokyo.
Delta officials announced that the integration process, which is expected to continue over the next 12 to 24 months, will be almost imperceptible to fliers. Passengers will continue to check in at Delta and Northwest ticket counters for their respective flights, and frequent traveler programs with each airline and its travel partners will not be affected. Members of Delta’s Crown Room and Northwest’s WorldClubs will enjoy reciprocity and have full access to each other’s airport lounges worldwide. Delta and Northwest will also feature full elite reciprocity for upgrades based on fliers’ status in either program on flights operated by the airlines.
Top executives at both Delta and Northwest expressed great excitement about the merger and anticipate a stronger airline with improved service for travelers.
