Dude ranches have long been a popular escape for "city slickers" looking for a chance to exchange suits for boots and a Stetson, and experience the joys of the great outdoors.

The most common type of guest ranch offers some amenities, such as:

• Swimming pools
• Horseback riding
• Hay rides
• Cookouts 
• Pack trips

At the larger resort ranches, which can host anywhere from fewer than 10 guests to more than 100, many more amenities are available, including adventurous Jeep excursions, racquetball courts, plus tennis and golf facilities.

Before finalizing your choice, check to see if there is a minimum stay requirement at the ranch you are considering. During the peak season - Memorial Day through Labor Day - there is often a one-week minimum stay requirement and reservations must be made several months in advance, depending on the ranch.
