Alabama Spelling Bee
What Is It?
The Alabama Spelling Bee, sponsored by Adventure Travel, sends the only Alabama
entry to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. area
The spelling bee tradition improves students' spelling skills and increases their
vocabularies. Bee participation also provides valuable experience in developing
poise - a necessary skill for public speaking, performing arts, and athletics.
How Does It Work?
The Alabama Spelling Bee program is open to all students, K-8, (public, private,
parochial and home-school), whose schools enroll with the Scripps National Spelling
Bee program by October 17, 2011. To compete in the Alabama Spelling Bee, students
must win a series of competitions at school, district and county levels. Home-school
students compete in home-school district bees to advance to the final home-school
"county" bee. County winners advance to the Alabama Spelling Bee in Birmingham to
compete for the state championship. The Alabama Spelling Bee winner will represent
the state at the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
